Dyslexia in Adults

  • What are the signs of dyslexia in adults?

Dyslexia most often causes difficulties with reading and spelling. However, some people may be fluent readers by the time they reach adulthood, and they may have got to grips with spelling.

Difficulties may continue show up in writing, in organisational skills and also in short term memory. Such difficulties can impact upon a persons confidence and affect performance in work or study.

  • How dyslexia can affect employers and employees

Sometimes dyslexia can affect a person’s willingness to train for further qualifications or to apply for a promotion. Stress related to the dyslexia can sometimes  affect a person’s work attendance, and also general happiness and productivity. Real strengths such as creativity and good problem solving abilities can go unnoticed.

An employer is however obliged to make reasonable adjustments to meet the requirements of disability and equality legislation.

We can help employers to become more ‘dyslexia friendly’ through our workplace consultancy and coaching services, as well as by recommending very specific support for an individual.

  • How dyslexia can affect students and adult learners

A person with dyslexia can sometimes struggle to meet the academic components of their course.

You should check with your college or university to see whether you may be eligible for a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA), as this can assist with the costs of any extra tuition or other support that you may need.

We can provide reports for DSA purposes, and also for requesting special examination access arrangements  or specialist equipment and aids  (e.g. Dictaphone, Microsoft software and text aids, laptop etc).

Please ask your sixth form centre, college or university whether you should apply for a DSA.
